McMillen Engineering prepared a few design concepts for this road reconfiguration project at Nemacolin. Working on a strict timeline, this civil engineering project was completed on time with stunning results. CIVIL ENGINEERING GRAND ENTRANCE AT NEMACOLIN RESORT ENTRANCE REDESIGN During a routine meeting with this forty-year client, the owner stated how unfortunate it was that the Chataeu Lafayette was not visible upon its approach due to the configuration of the access road. At that time Nemacolin had two entrances from Route 40 that joined together before it reached the Chateau from the side. McMillen Engineering prepared a few design concepts that joined the two entrances into one and completely changed the entrance road alignment so that it approached with the Chateau in full view. Project scope for the Grand Entrance at Nemacolin: Base Mapping Preliminary Site Planning Final Site Land Development Planning Stormwater Management Planning NPDES Permit Preparation Utility Coordination Construction Engineering and Inspection CREATING A GRAND ENTRANCE AT NEMACOLIN Originally the parking garage was on a side road with entry at a lower level without any view of the hotel. Our new design provided a bridge directly from the entrance to the top of the garage, which added a full view of the Chateau upon arrival and a stunning view of the mountain upon departure. McMillen Engineering designed new access roads to the north of the main campus to be used by delivery vehicles and service staff. This design provided a concealed entrance, whereas previous deliveries and service access were mainly front of the house. Soon after the design was approved, it was announced that Nemacolin would host a portion of the Bachelorette television show. The client decided that the new entrance should be complete before taping of the show, which meant construction through the worst of winter. The harsh winter weather resulted in sub-zero temperatures on many days during the construction process. Because keeping the soil and concrete from freezing was difficult, heavy blankets were needed to keep the subbase soil from freezing before the concrete was poured. This method was necessary to keep the concrete from freezing before it properly set-up to the desired strength. This civil engineering project was completed on time with stunning results. Fayette Springs extends south from the National Pike and crosses Big Sandy Creek, which is designated as a high quality cold water fishery (HQ CWF). The existing culvert was undersized and often flooded in heavy rain events. The flooding of this roadway would result in a public safety issue requiring the roadway to be closed to the public. The Township supervisors wanted to make sure the ultimate repair for Fayette Springs Road would help preserve the native brook trout population and comply with current DEP requirements for high quality cold water fisheries, while also ensuring the health and safety of their residents. McMillen Engineering, Inc. proposed the use of a Contech Aluminum Box Culvert with an open bottom utilizing an Express Foundation system. The aluminum culvert and express foundation system saved money, but equally important minimized the time that the road was closed. There has been wide spread flooding issues throughout all of Fayette County; however, this once flood prone area weathered the storms without incident. Wharton Township now has a structure that has improved the health and safety of the residents while allowing native brook trout to migrate north towards the headwaters of Big Sandy Creek helping to preserve the native brook trout for generations to come. MUNICIPAL & COUNTY FAYETTE COUNTY COURTHOUSE STRUCTURAL REPAIR PROJECT McMillen Engineering, Inc. worked with the Fayette County Commissioners on restoring the structural integrity of the Fayette County Courthouse, County Building, Prison, and Federal Building. Due to the historical significance of the Fayette County Courthouse, each aspect of the project required approval from the Pennsylvania Historical Museum and Commission. FAYETTE COUNTY COURTHOUSE RENOVATIONS Multiple renovations were needed to address the age of the structure and/or meet the needs of the various county offices and court of common pleas. The McMillen Engineering team cooperated with Fayette County officials and department directors to ensure daily operations were not disrupted throughout the construction process. This was extremely critical during completion of work at the County Jail. The project consisted of repairing the roofing membrane on various portions of the Fayette County Courthouse and Prison; replacing stone window lintels on the Prison; repointing masonry on the Fayette County Courthouse and Prison; replacing the skylight on the County Building; repairing a structural wall in the Prison; replacing the gutter system on the Fayette County Courthouse; and Structural repairs to the Fayette County Courthouse Bell Tower.
